How to measure

Measure twice, love it forever

The measurements of your wall might seem like the least exciting part of this whole process, but they’re quietly the most important. Get them right, and everything else—the design, the print, the finish—falls perfectly into place. So before you fall in love with a pattern or a colour, let’s take a moment to talk measurements. This wall dimensions guide will walk you through it simply, so what arrives at your door fits as accurately as it should.

Full Wall Coverage

Covering the entire wall from edge to edge? Here’s how to do it right.

  • Width:
Measure the horizontal distance from one corner to the other.
  • Height:
Measure the vertical height at both corners. If the two differ, always go with the greater one.

Always use a measuring tape, not a ruler.

Partial Wall Coverage

Covering a feature panel, a headboard area, or a specific section? Mark your boundaries first, following these simple steps:

  • Use a pencil to lightly mark the corners of the area you want to cover.
  • Measure the width between those marks horizontally.
  • Measure the height at both sides of the marked area; use the greater measurement if they differ.

Walls with Doors or Windows

Two approaches, depending on what works for your space:

  • Wallpapering around the opening:
Measure the total wall width and height as normal. The sections around the door or window get trimmed neatly during installation.
  • Wallpapering only specific sections:
Treat each section as its own wall and measure each one independently.

When in doubt, go with the full wall measurement. Trimming later is always better than wallpaper that falls short.

Where most people go wrong

Small errors here can throw off the entire fit.
Keep these in mind when you're working out how to measure your wall:

Measuring only once:

Always measure twice; walls can surprise you, especially large ones.

Forgetting uneven walls:

Older homes, especially, can have walls that aren’t perfectly square. Take the height from both corners and use the larger figure.

Rounding down:

Always round up, never down, when a measurement falls between two numbers.

Skipping the buffer:

A few extra inches on your width and height give you breathing room during installation.

Mixing units:

Pick one unit and stick with it. Switching midway is where things go wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I measure my wall for wallpaper?

Use a measuring tape to note the full width (horizontal, corner to corner) and height (vertical, at both corners) of your wall. If the height varies between corners, always use the larger number. For partial coverage, mark your boundaries first, then measure within them. Follow this, and you'll have everything you need to measure a wall for wallpaper accurately and place a confident order.

Q: How much extra wallpaper should I order?

Add at least 2 to 3 inches to both your width and height as a buffer. It gives you room to adjust during installation and ensures the edges line up cleanly. A little extra goes a long way; running short mid-install isn't a situation you want to be in.

Q: How do I measure walls with doors and windows?

Measure the full wall width and height as normal; the wallpaper around door or window frames is trimmed away during installation. If you'd rather measure only the sections being covered, treat each one separately and submit individual measurements. Not sure which approach is right for your space? Our team is happy to help you work it out.

Q: What happens if I enter the wrong wall measurements?

Get in touch with us as soon as you spot the error, ideally before production begins. Since every wallpaper is printed to order, changes may not be possible once printing starts, but we'll always do our best to sort it. Take your time with measurements before placing your order, and if you're unsure about anything, reach out before you checkout.

Q: Do I need a wallpaper calculator to measure accurately?

A measuring tape and this wall dimensions guide will get you there for most standard walls. A wallpaper calculator is a useful double-check, but accuracy comes down to careful, consistent measuring more than any tool. Got an oddly shaped wall or multiple sections to cover? Get in touch, and we'll help you figure out exactly what you need.
